BCGEU College support worker strike ZERO TOLERANCE FOR 0-0-0 |
Member comments taped on the line of the January / February 2005 British Columbia Government and Service Employees' Union |
The BCGEU represents over 1600 support workers in six post-secondary institutions: Kwantlen University College, Douglas College, BC Institute of Technology, Northern Lights College, Northwest Community College, and Okanagan University College |
BCGEU support workers at these colleges have been without a contract for two years. The union has tried to negotiate a fair settlement that recognizes the sacrifices made by its members in the past - including no wage increases for five of the past seven years, and only 4.4% in the other two. Real incomes for BCGEU members have fallen by 7 percent in that time. |
However, the provincial government refuses to lift its zero wage mandate, while allowing colleges to give its administrators double-digit wage increases - up to 40% in the last two years - and in spite of a $2 billion provincial surplus this year. more |
