Teachers from across the province continued their ongoing dialogue about the enhancement of teaching and learning in Vancouver November 6, 2006 at a Teachers Forum on teaching and learning, sponsored by the BC Teachers Federation (BCTF). The Forum was a day of plenaries and discussions among teachers who fully understand and appreciate the challenges that face education today.
The forum provided teachers with another opportunity to become openly engaged about teaching methods, curriculum, and learning conditions necessary to meet student needs. BCTF President Jinny Sims said, The forum will provide a voice for teachers in an environment in which their opinions and suggestions are not only welcome, but are encouraged, and where the input of teachers will be respected and valued. This day-long forum is not an isolated event, unlike the premiers congress. The forum is part of the BCTFs ongoing commitment to provide students with the best education possible. BC teachers have serious concerns about the direction of education policy in the province.
As a democratic organization, the BCTF has invited delegates from every teacher association in the province to participate in this open-door event. The BCTF chose not to participate in the premiers congress because of the unrepresentative nature of its invitation list and its lack of transparency, says Sims.
