1935 OTO trekkers unveil plaque |
On Thursday June 7, 2001 the Government of Canada, through its Ministry of Canadian Heritage commemorated the 1935 On to Ottawa trek by unveiling a new plaque in Regina. .
|
The plaque is near the corner of Scarth Street and Eleventh Avenue, where some of the worst violence took place during the July 1 1935 Regina Police Riot. The attack was directed by the government of Conservative Prime Minister Richard "Ironheel" Bennett against the nearly 2000 unemployed men who were traveling to Ottawa. |
The government was determined to disperse the growing protest of single unemployed men who had left Vancouver weeks earlier, "riding the rod" on top of freight train boxcars. The protestors were tired of being ignored by the federal government so they had decided to take their demands for "work, wages and an end to relief camps" directly to officials in Ottawa - the On to Ottawa trek. |
