JANUARY 27, 2003, VANCOUVER: Public school teachers and college educators came together today to mark one year since the devastating weekend when the B.C. Liberals rammed through Bills 27, 28 and 29. Neil Worboys, President of the B.C. Teachers' Federation, noted that January 28 is a dark day for those in the education community from pre-school to post-secondary. "On that day, the B.C. Liberals gutted our contracts of the very provisions that protect the quality of education. We've been seeing the devastating impact ever since then in terms of larger classes, less support for students with special needs, 2,000 fewer teachers, and 44 schools closed." Cindy Oliver, President of the College Institute Educators' Association, called on government to repeal the legislation that broke collective agreements covering about 150,000 British Columbians, including teachers and college educators. She said that college educators throughout B.C. have always fought to ensure small classes and adequate learning support for students. Concerned that Education Minister Christy Clark disavows any awareness of the negative impact of her government's cuts, the BCTF has decided to send her the information she needs. Starting next week, five school buses will begin wending their way throughout the province collecting messages for the minister from students, parents, teachers and concerned community members |
After the buses have visited every school district, they will deliver the messages to the minister. This graphic ( on the right ) will be on the side of each bus. Click here for more . . . |
