CITIZENS FOR PUBLIC POWER HOSTS FORUM ON THE SELLING OUT OF BC'S WATER

Public forum comes on eve of UBCM vote on Bill 30

(VANCOUVER) Citizens for Public Power will be holding a public forum at the Vancouver Public Library this Saturday on the threats to public ownership of BC's natural resources, namely hydropower. The forum will engage the public, local officials and stakeholders on the eve of a vote by the Union of BC Municipalities in support of the provincial government repealing Bill 30.

"The privatization of our run-of-the-river water power resources by the provincial government is happening under the radar screen," said John Calvert, an SFU adjunct professor and Board Member of Citizens for Public Power. "But it will result in ratepayers being forced to pay billions of dollars more for their energy in the coming decades. There has been no public discussion of the long-term implications on future prices, community impacts, the environment or the ability of citizens in BC to maintain control of their electricity system in the future." more
