Gordon Campbells massive cuts in key government services and programs to pay for equally large tax cuts to corporations and the rich will cost at least 14,000 jobs and may trigger a deep recession B.C. unionists warned at a rally in Victoria yesterday. .

The new Liberal government has effectively frozen budgets for health care and education over the next 3 years and is planning on cutting other ministries by 20 to 50 per cent in order to balance future budgets.

George Heyman
, President of the BC Government & Service Employees Union cautioned the government to move slower. With the economy already shaky, "people are counting on you not to make things worse," Heyman told the government finance committee, at a meeting earlier in the day.

"Service cuts and job cuts take us in the wrong direction" he said. "They create uncertainty, fear and confrontation. A balanced budget is important but services to people are even more important."
