Robert
"Bobby"
Jackson
memorial

A full length program taped at memorial services last summer for Robert "Bobby" Jackson. He died June 27, 2000 in Powell River of stomach cancer. Described by the Globe and Mail as a "folk hero", his memorial drew so many people that two services were organized - one in Vancouver and one in his home town of Powell River.

Bobby was a veteran of the 1935 On to Ottawa trek, a lifelong labour and social justice activist and Communist Party member. In his latter years he was President of the On to Ottawa Historical Society. He dedicated himself to keeping alive the lessons and the spirit of the labour and unemployed struggles of the past, which brought about the social programs we enjoy today. He was particularly concerned with reaching young people and his last initiative was a new On to Ottawa trek website which is now online @ www.ontoottawa.ca
