Last year TransLink, the Greater Vancouver transit authority, raised bus fares promising to improve service. But now they are cancelling orders for new buses, announcing cuts to service, and have forced a strike by bus drivers ( Canadian Auto Workers 111 ) who haven't had a pay increase in 11 years. The only bright spot in the local transit scenario is that transit workers, transit users, environmentalists and other activists are getting organized and fighting back. On Saturday March 31 this new coalition made sure TransLink heard from the community. The message both outside on the street and inside the packed public TransLink meeting was clear and simple: It's the Buses, Stupid! |
